Visitors to Gdańsk will see a great number of clocks around the city. There are clocks on jewellery and watchmaker shops, cafes and church towers. There is even a Tower Clock Museum and gallery located in the tower of St Catherine's church.

Tower clocks, pendulum and astronomical clocks or sundials in Gdańsk represent the city's bond with astronomy and its famous citizen Jan Heweliusz, the 17th century astronomer.

The first tower clock in Gdańsk was installed on the tower of St. Mary's church in 1389. The biggest and most representative Gdańsk tower clock is on the Town Hall. It has got 16 bells that play music every hour. On the biggest, there is an old Latin inscription: OMNIA TEMPVS HABET ET SVIS SPATIIS TRANSEVNT VNIVERSA SVB COELO, meaning: " Everything holds on to time and within its boundries many words pass under the sky."
