GRÀCIA - A TOWN IN THE CITY

The Town Square (until 2009, Rius i Taulet) is the administrative center of the town of Gràcia. The bell tower that dominates the square was built by Antoni Rovira i Trias between 1862 and 1864. It is an octagonal tower with a clock on each four sides. On top, there is the legendary "Campana de Gracia” named "la Marieta”. Legend has it that in 1870, there was a serious riot and the bell was ringing from the 4th to the 9th of April, pulled by a rope from the roof of a neighbor. The troops of General Gaminde located in the plane of Barcelona, bombarded the rebellious town to try to silence the bell. That´s why we can hear its cracked sound. This story was the base for the foundation of one of the oldest publications in the Catalan press. Created by Innocent Bernagosi Lopez, "La Campana de Gracia" was published for 60 years until October 1934.
On the east side of the square, there is the District headquarters building, designed by Francesc Berenguer i Mestres.

This square in Gràcia has had four official names: Orient, Constitució, Rius i Taulet and the current one: Plaça de la Vila. Popularly, it is also know as the Clock square or the Bell tower square.
