Miercurea Ciuc (Romania)

FEEL THE CITY

The Franciscan Order has played an important role in the cultural and educational life of the town since the middle ages.  The Franciscan library, now preserved in the town’s Museum, contains handwritten and printed books from the 15th to the 18th century, and it is one of the few entirely preserved religious libraries that date back to the Middle Ages. For fear the communist regime would destroy or confiscate their valuable codexes, the monks hid some of them in the walls of the monastery in 1948.

This can be considered a metaphor of how religious institutions tried to preserve freedom of thought and conscience, as well as old spiritual values in the cruel context of communist dictatorship.
